The grandson of anti-gun crime campaigner Pat Regan was last night charged with her murder on Sunday night.  Twenty-year-old Rakeim Regan is due to make his first appearance at Leeds Magistrates' Court today.

A post mortem showed the 53-year-old mother-of-six died from multiple stab wounds.

Regan was also charged with wounding with intent over an incident earlier in the day at Leeds train station when a 45-year-old guard was stabbed.

Rakeim is being represented by Grahame Stowe, senior partner at leading Leeds practice Grahame Stowe Bateson.

Mrs Regan became a determined campaigner against guns following the violent death of her son Danny who was shot in St Helens, Merseyside, in 2002. She set up her own group, Mothers Against Violence, in Leeds.

Her death at her home in Marlborough Grange, central Leeds, stunned friends and admirers. Tributes flowed in from fellow campaigners and Government ministers.

Yesterday, Councilor Mohammed Rafique said: "The last time I spoke to Pat was during a visit by the Princess Royal to Leeds and it was clear that she was extremely passionate about the work she was involved in to reduce gun and knife crime not only in Leeds but nationally too.

"Pat was a fearless campaigner who worked tirelessly with Mothers Against Violence and her untimely death is a tremendous loss to the community and to the campaign."
